While we're engaged at the state level in California fighting to preserve the independent model in our industry, there's some good news out of Washington, D.C. On July 26, just before Congress left for its August recess, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21st) introduced the Modern Worker Empowerment Act (H.R. 4069), which would fix the current patchwork system of multiple federal tests, providing clear and consistent rules of the road in terms of who is an employee and who is an independent contractor. Attendees of ASTA Legislative Day 2019 will remember that this was one of our policy "asks." ASTA strongly supports this legislation (see support letter here), which is cosponsored by Reps. Bradley Bryne (AL-1st), Phil Roe (TN-1st) and Ron Wright (TX-6th). Kudos to Congresswoman Stefanik for her leadership on this critical issue!
