Your Ultimate Global Pride Guide

The American Society of Travel Advisors Provide Expert Resources so You Can Follow the
Rainbow Around the World

Alexandria, VA, Thursday, May 31 - Pride is more than a month in a year. The celebration takes place year-round all over the world from Dallas to Sri Lanka, Latvia to Auckland and in many other highly desirable travel destinations you won’t want to miss.

“Travel unites us in so many ways,” said Erika Richter, Communications Director at the ASTA. “This year, we encourage travelers to extend their stay during Pride and consider an international host city in a place they’ve never been. It’s a one-of-a-kind chance to truly immerse in the destination while connecting with LGBTQ communities around the globe.”

The American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) tapped their travel agents specializing in LGBTQ travel planning for tips to personalize your trip from destination to local inside access. ASTA’s consumer-facing website also allows travelers to search for LGBTQ travel specialist with hands-on destination experience. Finally, our friends at the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) have created a one-stop listing for events around the world, the 2018 International Gay Pride Calendar.

ASTA recommends enlisting a travel agent to have your best Pride yet. Many travel professionals are saying “come for Pride, stay for the destination”:

  • Vicky Garcia, Cruise Planners COO, Co-Owner and ASTA member says, “When booking pride events with a travel agent who is a member of ASTA and IGLTA, travelers can be assured their travel agent book the best accommodations for their group and they can also arrange for VIP access to events. IGLTA travel agents are knowledgeable about LGBTQ-friendly destinations and can also provide a list of activities and must-see hot spots and bars and restaurants or arrange for private tours to give the travelers a total immersion in the destination in addition to the Pride events.”
  • Jacob Marek, IntroverTravels, an ASTA member and Virtuoso agency says, “Throngs of LGBTQ people will travel thousands of miles to attend a Pride festival. When you've traveled all that way, I suggest extending your trip and exploring more of the host country.

Cape Town Pride in South Africa happens in late-February, when Americans are sick of winter and South Africans bask in a late-summer warmth. Spend an extra week in the country to visit Kruger National Park, where you'll find prides of lions instead of pride parades. South Africa openly embraces LGBTQ visitors, and became the world's fifth country to legalize marriage equality in 2006.

With Iceland's soar in popularity recently, Reykjavik Pride, held this year from August 7-12, is a great opportunity to explore the land of fire and ice. And with daily non-stop flights from many major cities, you can be there in as few as six hours.

For some extra Latin pasión this Pride season, check out Buenos Aires Gay Pride (Marcha del Orgullo), held on November 10. Don't miss Iguazu Falls, on the border of Argentina and Brazil, and consider venturing to the End of the Earth in Patagonia, a vast expanse of remote wilderness with sharp granite peaks, hikeable glaciers, and the southernmost inhabited city on Earth, Ushuaia.”
  • Rob Clabbers, President of Q Cruise + Travel, an ASTA member and Virtuoso agency, based in Chicago, IL shares, “Don’t limit yourself to June. Internationally, some of the best LGBTQ pride festivals take place in other months. Major events like those in Paris, France; Cologne, Munich or Frankfurt, Germany; and London are in July, for example. Events can also be known by different names: in Berlin, for example, the term Christopher Street Day is better known; while Sydney’s Mardi Gras takes place in March. A good travel agent would be able to help you find hotels that offer ‘Pride’ or LGBTQ packages – or arrange upgrades, free breakfast and other amenities at some of the top hotels in most Pride locations. A travel agent can work with tourism board allies or local partners around the world to get you more insight and LGBTQ-relevant information to make your trip even better.”
  • Kareem George, Principal of Culture Traveler, based in Franklin, Michigan and ASTA Member, says, “Pride month provides an inspiration to visit iconic destinations in celebration of their diverse, vibrant LGBTQ communities. European capital cities such as Zürich, Vienna and Milan become seemingly more approachable with festive occasions to connect with locals. Pride celebrations in the southern hemisphere offer wonderful escapes for North Americans outside of our busy summer season. Why not escape to Buenos Aires in November or discover Cape Town in February to celebrate with their dynamic LGBTQ communities?"
